Esparto Declaration as representative manifestation of Intangible Cultural Heritage (19/12/2018)

And Cieza, the sparking city par excellence, too |

On December 12, the resolution of the General Directorate of Fine Arts was published in the Official Gazette whereby the Esparto declaration file was initiated as a representative manifestation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In 2014 the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE) made a specific study on esparto, considering Cieza as the most important enclave for its link with fiber and, for having been the first manufacturing town in Spain between the years 50-60, study that culminated with the publication in 2016 of the Safeguarding Plan for the Culture of Esparto.

"The interest in declaring Esparto Culture as a Representative Manifestation of Intangible Cultural Heritage is justified in the resolution - by the need to protect, in a context of unprecedented technological and economic globalization, a large part of this heritage, still alive, but that it presents a fast deterioration, due to the advanced age of the people who can still transmit their knowledge ".

Within a broader geographic framework, the protection of this heritage could prevent the loss of ancestral knowledge belonging to a millenary culture common to Spain, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, contributing at the same time, to fix in their places of origin populations exposed to the traumas of unemployment and emigration.

From the Esparto de Cieza Museum (Esparto Interpretation Center and its Industry) we want to show our satisfaction for this recognition.

A recognition that encourages us to continue working so that the second part of this project of international character will be successfully completed: that crafts related to the esparto culture will be declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Congratulations to the whole espartera community for their work and dedication to safeguard the esparto culture and its working memory.

Long live esparto!
