The memory of the Prado from the balcony of the Siyâsa (03/02/2020)

Since the Royal Museum was opened on November 19, 1819 with funds from the royal collections, this institution has become one of the main repositories of Western pictorial memory, a fundamental reference point of Spanish culture and a object of collective pride.

Two hundred years after its foundation, the Prado Museum reflected on all this and shared it with its visitors in an exhibition format that for almost four months turned its rooms A and B into a rich center of interpretation of its development and historical significance.

Two hundred years old he completed the Prado Museum in 2019 - exactly on November 19 - and it is impossible to understand its history by observing only the best paintings it retains.

The gallery is not simply the building that houses the 'Triptych of the Garden of Earthly Delights', by El Bosco, 'Los fusilamientos', by Goya, or the 'Crucified Christ' by Velázquez, but it is an institution that reflects the history of Spain;

a creation center that also welcomes the collective memory of the country.

The building that today houses the best brushstrokes in the history of Spanish art was not initially conceived as a museum.

King Carlos III ordered the architect Juan de Villanueva the construction, in the Paseo del Prado, of the Cabinet of Natural Sciences;

and he executed the design in 1785. The Bourbon monarch would die three years later and, in these circumstances, the final decision on what to do with the building fell to the figure of Ferdinand VII, his grandson, who was spurred by his wife, the queen María Isabel de Braganza, made the decision to create a Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures.

A place of memory, a chronological journey through the past of Spanish society throughout these two centuries that during months of last year was explored with various events and traveling exhibitions in Spain and different cities of the world.

In its effort to connect with the people, and as the main cultural institution of the country, the Prado Museum also wanted to make its entire bicentennial participant through a micro-patronage program, approaching the groups at risk of social exclusion and taking the masterpieces to the street to visualize the national commitment of the art gallery.

The works of Velázquez, Rembrandt, Goya, Fra Angelico or Lavinia Fontana, one of the most notable women of Western art, traveled throughout the Autonomous Communities thanks to 'On tour in Spain'.

The 200th anniversary of the art gallery now arrives in Cieza with a sample that follows the trail of which toured key points of the planet in 2019. The Department of Museums and Education inaugurated on Friday night 'A walk through the Prado' in the Museum Siyâsa.

A proposal that is a nod to the pinacoteca par excellence of Spain after the celebration of its bicentennial in November 2019. It can be visited until February 20 in the San Sebastián street enclosure after its opening with the assistance of the mayor, Pascual Lucas.

Councilors Conchi Villa and María Ramos also attended, who are planning a tour of the city's educational centers that request it to return again in November to Siyâsa.

'A walk through the Prado' consists of 14 works among which are Las Majas de Goya, 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' by El Bosco and 'Las Meninas' by Velázquez, the most representative canvas, surely, of the national art gallery .

The selection has been carried out under the supervision of the curator of the exhibition, Jose Perona Lucas, Professor of Art History.
