IU-Verdes supports the mobilization of farmers on February 21 (17/02/2020)

IU-Verdes de Cieza expresses its full support for the mobilization convened by COAG, ASAJA and UPA and supported by CCOO and UGT, for next February 21 in the city of Murcia, on the occasion of the denunciation of the low prices received by the producers in origin that do not compensate the costs of production, and for the denunciation of the speculative abusive commercial practices of the great agri-food distribution chains.

In a press release, its coordinator in Cieza, Francisco Saorín, considers it necessary an intervention of public administrations in the sector in such a way that minimum and fair prices are guaranteed by law that make agricultural and livestock farms viable, thus also ensuring the survival of an essential sector for the fight against climate change, to face the demographic and land occupation challenges, as well as preserve a culture and economic practices necessary for human existence itself.

Saorín has called on the Ministry of CARM to "increase control and inspection systems to avoid unfair competition that is generated by the entry of products from third countries that do not meet the required quality standards in Spain."

Saorín has stated that "from IU-Verdes we are demanding that the European Commission should review the CAP assistance so that the benefit of them falls sufficiently on small and medium-sized farmers and ranchers of family farms and that they have in account of the professional farmer supporting mainly those who live and work in the agricultural activity, betting on the family farming model. In this regard we see with optimism the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture to open a dialogue table between the large distribution areas food and agricultural unions. From IU-Verdes we will work because this initiative is successful for farmers and ranchers. "

"We demand, in this sense, that the cuts produced in aid, both from the CAP and state and regional aid, to agriculture and livestock are reversed. In this line we support the initiative of IU in the European Parliament in the sense of demanding from the European institutions a greater intervention to defend agriculture against the big traders, since there are no minimum prices, these are what dictate the market norms, "said Saorín.

For the head of IU-Greens in Cieza, "it is time to make a great social and legislative commitment to the regulation of short cycles of commercialization of agricultural and livestock products, with proximity products and origin labeling, compared to practices speculative and monopolistic of the large distribution groups. "

Finally, Saorín has stated that "it is necessary to continue opposing the development of international trade agreements such as TTIP that have a powerful economic, environmental and labor rights impact and delve into the problem of overproduction and price devaluation."
