Saorín recommends following special hygiene measures for smokers (07/07/2020)

| The Councilor for Health and Public Health of the City of Cieza stresses the expulsion of respiratory droplets that can contain viral load and be highly contagious along with the relaxation factor of the social distance of security | Last Thursday, the Public Health Commission of the National Health System approved by consensus the "Positioning in relation to tobacco consumption and related during the pandemic by COVID-19".In a press release, the councilor for Health and Public Health of the City of Cieza, Francisco Saorín, explained that the document emphasizes the new risks associated with the act of smoking and vaping.

Thus, in general, it indicates that "its consumption should be avoided in community and social environments" specifying that "if it is carried out, it should be in separate open spaces, limiting the personal hygiene measures of the consumer, with handwashing before and after the manipulation of the products and utensils used ".Saorín specifies that the document refers specifically to water pipes "whose shared use was prohibited during phases 1, 2 and 3 of the Plan for the Transition to a New Normality in accordance with the provisions of letter f) of articles 16 and 19 of the respective ministerial orders ".This is also indicated at present taking into account the general hygiene recommendations to avoid the transmission of COVID-19.

On this consumption there are already some autonomous communities that are developing, in a complementary way, their own regulations.Risk factorLikewise, the mayor has stressed that the document recalls that tobacco consumption, in any form, has been shown to worsen the course of respiratory diseases and is, therefore, an important risk factor for cardiovascular, oncological, as well as for diabetes, among other pathologies.Regarding the relationship between smoking and COVID-19 progression, "current evidence indicates that smoking is associated with its negative progression and adverse outcomes."Along these same lines, the text reports that the WHO warns that "there is increasing evidence that the consumption of electronic cigarettes produces side effects in the lungs, heart and blood vessels, and this could increase the risk of severe complications from COVID-19 ".Finally, Saorín has stressed the need to comply with the recommendations of the Public Health Commission, which has approved by consensus a position on tobacco and other related products in COVID-19.
