Podemos-Cieza: "Making the return to class and the right to health compatible is a challenge that is great for López Miras" (08/09/2020)

| According to Podemos-Cieza, face-to-face and direct teaching are the only formulas that guarantee full equality in education | It seems that the school year will begin in Murcia without hiring one more of the eight hundred teachers who were already committed and announced by the regional government.

Of course, ours is one of the autonomous communities in which the start of the school year has been delayed, with the consequent damage to students and their families.

Our leaders ignore what is already a popular cry in the region: a much greater endowment of supplementary resources to guarantee the safe return to the classrooms of all educational centers. From our point of view, the blended solution is, in a way, a scam, a cheap patch to give the impression that measures are being taken and, at the same time, not properly manage the 73 million euros sent from the Government Central to our Autonomous Community, in order to strengthen the educational system.During confinement, it has been shown that the Educational Centers have obsolete, outdated and scarce technological resources that have not served to provide a solution to online education, in addition to the fact that most families do not have the technological devices and perhaps the necessary knowledge to be able to help your children from home. Therefore, the blendedness in the classrooms, as has been raised by the Ministry of Education in Murcia, is nothing other than the violation of the right to education, which happens to have some days yes and others not, since the strict presence in the classrooms of the centers is the only formula compatible with the superior value of equality that the Constitution advocates as one of its backbones.

Technology is not a magic wand that can solve all teaching problems, but a complementary tool for direct teaching, which will be convenient to the extent that it serves to broaden horizons, to integrate, but which can also multiply the resulting disadvantages from disadvantaged social situations. From the point of view of Podemos-Cieza, the challenge is, therefore, to make possible presence in classrooms and the minimization of health risk, combining the right to education for all with the right to health.

A challenge that is great for President López Miras and his counselor Esperanza Moreno, but which could be within reach with a sufficient increase in the resources allocated, reducing the number of students per classroom (ratio) and increasing the number of teachers required, among other measures. Thus, from Podemos-Cieza we consider that the levels of educational investment have not been recovered for 10 years (about 1,000 million euros lost for public education) and the cuts that came with it.

Only by recovering these levels could a good part of the demands of the educational community in Murcia at this juncture be addressed. The investment effort in education is not necessary only because of the pandemic, but it was necessary before to harmonize ourselves with the investment standards of the States of our closest economic and political environment and to turn Spain into a country of progress.

As is often the case, the impact of the pandemic goes beyond its mere direct effect on the educational system, in which it generates new demands, but also reveals the shortcomings inherited from previous political stages that were presided over by austerity dogma and by the privatizing efforts of an economic oligarchy in concert with the political right. In short, the truth is that, unfortunately, the beginning of the course in the Murcia Region is not going to be as safe as it should be, despite the efforts of professionals and management teams, and the collaboration of students and their families.

To all of them, from Podemos-Cieza, we send a message of sincere gratitude and offer them all possible support, with the guarantee that we will continue to claim and hope that public education will pass, once and for all, to occupy its rightful place in the priorities of our governors, state, regional and local; with COVID-19 and after it.
