Ecologists in Action shows its concern about the health impact of frost burns (27/02/2018)

The environmental organization is calling for measures to prevent episodes like last Saturday's, in which Cieza was completely enveloped in smoke from straw and paraffin burns for 8 hours straight.

Ecologistas en Acción has expressed concern about the extent of paraffin and straw alpaca burns in the Vega Alta in recent days.

A practice that, in addition to showing itself to be ineffective, continues to cause dense clouds of smoke, triggering pollution levels for hours and affecting thousands of people.

The environmental organization explains that during the month of February there have already been four episodes of contamination by these fires.

The most serious of all took place last Saturday.

That day the levels of pollution by particles were very high during 8 hours, reaching peaks of pollution by particles (PM10) close to 500 micrograms / m3, ten times above the limit of 50 micrograms / m3.

Ecologists in Action, which explains that smoke gets into homes at dawn, has shown its concern again for the incidence of these practices for the health of the population, and remember that exposure to high peaks of particles, as occurs in These episodes have negative consequences on the respiratory and cardiovascular system.

In addition to other effects caused by pollutants that are also generated, in addition to particles, in the combustion of straw and chemicals such as paraffin, increasingly used.

The pollution has been more intense, they explain, in population centers such as Cieza, or Abarán, which due to their geographical location are especially affected in this type of burning.

In the case of Cieza, the contamination remained very high during 8 consecutive hours.

Finally, from the environmental organization regret that from the competent administrations are still turning a deaf ear to the recommendations of the sanitary authorities and air quality control on the dangerousness of these practices, and that consequently the postponement of the taking of decisions that would allow us to begin to redirect this situation for the benefit of all.
