The Murcia region has exceeded in just ten months, from January to October 2011, the number of organ donors in 2010, announced today the managing director of Murcia Health Service (SMS), José Antonio Alarcón, who insisted that "coordination between different parts of health is essential gear to detect all potential organ donors and to reduce the number of refusals to donation."

Alarcon, who opened in Cieza VI Conference on Transplantation and Quality of Life organized by the Association of Transplantation Murcia (ADEMTRA), said that "in the Autonomous Community of organ donation rate in 2010 and in the course of this year exceeds the national average "and added that the Hospital Universitario Virgen de La Arrixaca" is among the three Spanish hospitals with greater number of multiple organ donors. "

"The Region is maintained between the regions with the highest rate in donations through the Murcian solidarity of all," said the managing director of SMS, while thanking "those who, despite having lost a loved one, have authorized the donation of some of their other organs to enable patients to live. "

As of October have been recorded in the region a total of 47 organ donors, compared to 46 that were throughout the past year.

According to Alarcon, in so far this year there have been 254 transplants, of which 81 were corneal, bone marrow 70, 53 liver, 44 kidney, four of the pancreas and two of heart.

The director explained that the donation process involving many professionals from the very moment in which a potential donor is identified.

Therefore, developed function was assessed by the transplant coordination teams to which he said, "are adding new professionals such as psychologists or social workers, among others."

From the Department of Health and Social Policy also works as the director recalled, in "close collaboration" with patients' associations, which are "very important" to raise awareness on donation.

VI Symposium on Transplantation and Quality of Life

The Sixth Conference on Transplantation and Quality of Life, organized by the Association of Transplantation Murcia (ADEMTRA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Policy and the University of Murcia, developed at the Hospital de La Vega Lorenzo Guirao from today until next Sunday, October 30.

Some of the topics set for this first session include, history of liver transplantation, the current status of cystic fibrosis and lung transplantation, as well as aspects of quality of life in transplant patients.

Tomorrow Saturday, October 29, will be set working groups and presentations will take place on 'VIII Concert for Life', by the Orchestra of the Conservatory of Music of Cieza.

And Sunday, October 30, will be closed these days with a guided visit to the Cave of the Serreta Sima.

Alarcon said that "this is a key forum to elaborate on various aspects related to the donation and transplantation for professionals, patients and families."

The director showed his support to associations, as well as those awaiting transplantation, and expressed his commitment and that of the regional administration to continue to play learning activities that help improve the quality of life of transplant.
