Landowners and volunteers recover riparian forest Segura in Cieza (19/01/2015)

A dozen owners environment Hoya de Don Garcia in Cieza participated in river restoration of the banks of the Segura, who had a remarkable invasion reed (Arundo donax).

This grass prevents the recovery of the riparian forest favors fires, increased water consumption and increases the risk of flooding.

The plantation is part of the Life + Segura Riverlink project funded primarily by the European Union, led by Segura basin.

Also participate as partners the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Murcia University, the University of Valladolid and ANSE.

The activity carried out involved the planting, after clearing of more than 100 native trees and shrubs typical of the bank as baladre (Nerium oleander), hackberry (Celtis australis), white poplar (Populus alba), elm (Ulmus minor), the twills and willows (Salix purpurea, S.fragilis), ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) or certain reeds like sedge (Cladium mariscus).

The plant has been produced mostly by the Directorate General for Environment, but also ANSE volunteers.

This river restoration has the peculiarity, like the rest of the planned project, that has been developed with the participation of the river adjoining owners, involving them in the planning stages, execution and maintenance of the bank through tools Land Stewardship.

La Hoya de Don García is not the only area to be restored this season, but performances are underway Puddles (Cieza) and The Olivarejo (Calasparra) to be addressed in the coming weeks.

A part of these initiatives, and others such as the study and marking of species, the main objective of Life + Segura Riverlink project is to improve the connectivity of the channel of Segura and Moratalla river by overcoming dams and weirs, to facilitate the passage of species Water and recover as far as possible the natural character of the river ecosystem.
