CHS Cieza launches in a pioneering project to replace the reeds of the river Segura by native species (12/11/2009)

The president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), José Salvador Fuentes Zorita, and the Mayor of Cieza, Antonio Tamayo, today visited the works included in the R + D + i for optimizing bioengineering techniques that allow improvement of the ecological and stabilize the banks of the Segura river passing through Cieza.

The works, which have a budget of 825,000 euros, will lead to environmental improvements and significant cost savings in cleaning up public waterways, which are the two main objectives pursued by the CHS.

This project is being undertaken simultaneously in the Segura River, in sections of Cieza, and Guardamar, in the course of Reguerón in Murcia.

In the case of Cieza, where CHS operates on a stretch of 1,750 meters, is aimed at improving environmental quality and landscape of the river Segura, for which, the first step is the removal of invasive vegetation (reeds), replacing by species of the first band waterfront, while stabilizing margins with bioengineering techniques (conditioning of the slope and installation of organic blanket).

The primary objective of the plan, the CHS running through Tragsa state company, is to gradually replace the landscape of the riverside reeds and rushes, and other native species that occupy this space.

The study will be coordinated by researchers from the Universities of Murcia and Alicante under the supervision of the Commissioner's Water CHS.

The work, which will be held for 18 months, is a pioneer in Spain and will be exported to other watersheds upon completion.

The research has a total budget of 3 million euros from the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, and the choice of venues is that it seeks to experiment with different sections characterized by differences in quality water and soil type.

They apply various techniques for removal of rhizomes of reeds and rushes, while we proceed to the reintroduction of native plants and water in the basin practically disappeared, like the rush and bulrush, and willow, poplar and Taraises, species whose populations have declined drastically due to pollution suffered by this river since the early 80's and direct human action by eliminating them with logging or plowing.

Furthermore, replacement and control of reed and cane is intended to reduce the risks of flooding and flood overflow if water from the river Segura, and obstructing the channels.

Remember that the CHS conducted for several years a program of cleaning the public waterways Segura basin, which takes place on a permanent basis and has an investment of several million euros, which, if These studies conclude successfully, the maintenance tasks in the rivers and streams will in the future, much more suitable from the environmental point of view, while lower costs of implementation.
